How stupid and cruel can people be? I just posted another warning about leaving dogs in hot cars. A west suburban Chicago woman, Mary R. Smith, 60, is facing animal cruelty charges after a dog died of apparent heatstroke that was left in a car outside Oak Brook Center Mall in Oak Brook, Thursday evening, July 20.
Officers were called at 7:48 p.m. for reports of a dog locked inside a white Mercedes at the mall, according to Oak Brook police. They found the vehicle parked, locked, and turned off with the windows closed and fogged.
A “brown, medium-size dog” was lying on the driver’s seat; police entered the vehicle to remove the dog who was taken to the VCA Arboretum View Animal Hospital in Downers Grove, where the dog was pronounced dead at 8:30 p.m.
When law enforcement found the dog, the heat index was 83 degrees, after temperatures had reached 95 degrees earlier that day. The dog had a core body temperature above 109 degrees at the time of its death.
Smith was charged with a misdemeanor count of animal cruelty. I’m unsure why there is no reported felony charge, because under the law there could be.
“This loss of a defenseless animal was avoidable and should not have occurred.” Oak Brook Police Chief James Kruger said in a statement. “There is no reason to take your pet out in extreme heat without adequate air conditioning and water.”
