A pit bull-looking dog named Buddy faced being put down even though he was thought to have saved a 9-year-old boy from drowning. In this tragic and bizarre story, the dog came from nowhere and saved the boy. The dog intervened as a 27-year-old woman allegedly drowned her own 5 year old and attempted to also kill her 9 year old in the Murray River in Moama, on the New South Wales-Victoria border this past March.
Buddy is believed to have dragged the child from the River after attacking the mother(who was then attempting to drown her boy). Because the dog obviously bit (in order to save the child’s life), the dog might have been subject to euthanasia under local law. And there was immediately no owner to claim the stray dog.
An online petition received more than 50,000 signatures, and police have ordered the dog to be returned home, as the dog’s owner was ultimately found.
Buddy has since been microchipped. The boy saved by Buddy was hospitalized, and is now doing physically well.
The boys’ grandparents reportedly warned authorities about the risk of the children’s mother after she was released from prison.
Perhaps Buddy should be renamed Lassie.
