Bretagne (pronounced Brittany) is the last known surviving 9/11 search and rescue dog, and she was euthanized Monday (June 6). She was over 16-years old, and it was simply time to allow a peaceful ending to a life well-lived.
Bretagne went out the way a hero should (tissue warning if you watch the video), as local local first responders lined up to honor her. She served for Hurricane’s Katrina and Rita, among other deployments. Post retirement she allowed elementary school children to read to her at a local school.
And most of all, like all our dogs, a best friend to those who knew her best.
CNN printed an obituary. That’s right – this hero with four legs deserves that.
