Our pets are growing sideways, as I discuss on my national Steve Dale’s Pet World radio show HERE with Dr. Kirk Brueninger, lead researcher at Banfield for the current state of pet health.
According to Banfield, about a third of our cats and dogs are overweight or obese, and the numbers are increasing at alarming rates.
More than 20 diseases have been linked to obesity in pets, so we’re seeing more of these illnesses as well.
Why are so many pets overweight or obese? Dr. Brueninger and I discuss those possibilities. What’s more, the number of overweight and obese people correlates with overweight and obese pets—though not state by state—where the relationship is inverse, as Brueninger explains.
Interestingly, our perception of healthy pet weight isn’t what it used to be. Brueninger explains how to tell—in the privacy of your home—if your pet is overweight or obese.
Weight loss plans and treatments are dependent on the individual pet. Talk to your veterinarian if your pet is overweight.
