I’ve always been a fan of “I Love Lucy,” who isn’t? As it happens, I got to know Lucille Ball personally. And I offer in this podcast behind the scenes secrets from “I Love Lucy,” and talk about the legend of what Lucille Ball was really like….some of what I talk about here is in the biographies, much is not. LISTEN to this podcast with me and WGN Producer and podcast host Craig Collins.
Lucille Ball was a very serious person, who meticulously rehearsed And every little detail of her bits were written, and not ad-libbed Though there were some surprising ad-libs. For example, I talk about how that had to happen in the grape stomping episode, “Lucy Makes an Italian Movie.” And, by the way, when Bill Holden lit Lucy Ricardo’s nose on fire, that just happened, and she just reacted as cameras ran. They hardly ever ever ever stopped cameras, they kept going.
We also talk about how innovative Desi Arnaz was, and how he contributed to the show.
We talked about how “I Love Lucy” came about. And how the show was cast. And whether or not William Frawley who played Fred Mertz got along with Vivian Vance, who was Ethel Mertz. Was the rumor true that the two didn’t get along?
I talked about how some laughter on “I Love Lucy” had to exactly be edited out.
