Add Beverly Hills to the growling list of communities where no dogs or cats (and in some places rabbits) can be sold at pet stores. The primary issue of pet stores selling these animals is where they are sourced, as NO responsible breeder EVER sells to a pet store. So, can you say ‘puppy mills?’
Among the many cities passing similar ordinances/laws are Chicago, IL; Phoenix, AZ, Los Angels, CA; San Diego, CA; Palm Beach, FL, North Miami and North Miami Beach, FL and Toronto, ONT. Canada, as well as the entire county of Cook in Illinois (which includes Chicago and many suburbs). For a full list check out the Best Friends website.
Aside from swanky Beverly Hills, this month Encinitas, CA and Fernandina Beach, FL are added to the growing list of communities limiting pet store sales. While the National Puppy Mill Project supports the notion (it’s their mission to close down puppy mills), and Best Friends Animal Society, this is really an organic movement that’s grown online. People are just tired of tortured animals – often that’s really what these stores are selling. That’s just the truth. And moreover, their mothers – those who must live in puppy mills their entire lives the are the ones really suffering. Tragic this can happen in America as long as it has been.
