All Dogs May Not Want to Meet Every Person or Every Dog They Encounter

I apparently surprised many with my answers on WGN Radio HERE about dogs playing with one another. Air personality King John Williams asked me about what your role is at the other end of the leash when your dog meets another on the street, “Shouldn’t you just allow them to be dogs and to play?” My answer, “Maybe yes but maybe not.”

I do believe:

  1. Your number one job is to do all your can to insure your dog is safe.
  2. Not all dogs want to play with other dogs, particularly dogs who don’t know one another.
  3. Absolutely, children should always ask before petting a dog but I actually believe that goes for adults too. Not all dogs want to meet every person (or every dog) they see on the street.
