Best Stress Buster at the Dentist: A Dog

It wasn’t all that long ago when getting work done at the dentists was guaranteed to be an awful experience Watch the old movies – and their depiction of a visit to the dentist office, it was apparently torture. However, that was then and this is now. Dentists have turned the public perception around about dentist visits.

Fear Free is an initiative to essentially do the same for veterinary practices, using proven methods to diminish and even eliminate fear, anxiety and stress of pets associated with vet visits.

One dentist in California, at Corte Madera Family Dentistry, is now offering Fear Free for humans with Kismet. She’s a 13-year old Chihuahua who rests in patients laps to relieve their anxiety as they undergo dental procedures. It’s ironic, as Kismet has no teeth in her mouth.

Dr. Cameron Garrett, the office’s dentist, and his wife, Debra Garrett, the dental hygienist, adopted Kismet in July. Since then, she’s been a great addition to their family practice in Corte Madera, CA. Dr. Garrett notes that the dog enjoys the attention by sitting in laps, and for humans the dog acts as a four-legged ant-anxiety medication.
