Conversations with Veterinarians in Florida and Texas During Irma and Post Harvey

Hear my live conversation with Dr. Patrick Flynn of Zoetis from his house in Clearwater, Florida, on Steve Dale’s Pet World on WGN radio. He describes the scene and explains why he chose not to evacuate. It has to do, in part, with this question: Where do you go? Dr. Flynn has two dogs and an African grey parrot. At this point, obviously—good or bad—residents there can’t go. We also talked about how pets are being accommodated by nearly all the shelters.

Flynn says his Labrador Retriever and Golden Retriever are helping to destress the family a bit.

Dr. Bill Folger’s home and veterinary practice survived Hurricane Harvey. However, that’s not the case for all homes and businesses, and Dr. Folger provides an update. He explains what’s going on there with animals still hoping to be reunited with their human families. Also, he says the majority of streets are now passable, but some are not.

I offer some tips regarding emergency preparedness no matter where you live. And doing so in advance matters, beginning with training cats to be comfortable in their carriers, and Dr. Folger explains why he agrees.
