Decoding Your Geriatric Cat with Dr. Debra Horwitz

Following the amazing sales – which continues – of Decoding Your Dog, authored by members of American College of Veterinary Behaviorists, Dr. Debra Horwitz also co-edits the current new release Decoding Your Cat.  She talks with me right here on my national Steve Dale’s Pet World radio show about problems which geriatric cats specifically have.  I love the comparison Dr. Horwitz makes between old dogs and old cats.

Horwitz says, after the age of 8 or 9 years and for sure with geriatric cats:

  • Visit the veterinarian for sure, at least annually, and have blood work done every year. A year is a long time for a senior cat.
  • Don’t leave food out all the time – actually feed your cat so you know how much food that each cat is getting.
  • Look for arthritis, which is surprisingly common in older cats.
  • Dental disease becomes increasingly common as cats age.
