Dog Lover Killed By Dogs: A Bizarre, Tragic Story
Share
This the most bizarre incident – Rebecca Carey, 23, of Decatur, GA a college student who cared for abandoned animals since she was a teenager was attacked and killed by her own dogs – or at least one of her dogs this past weekend, according to Fox News in Atlanta.
Authorities said Carey, had five dogs living with her at the time of her death. They included a Pit Bull-type dog, which she had owned for six years, a Boxer mix and a Presa Canario. She was also dog sitting another Presa for a friend.
Carey’s body was discovered Sunday afternoon (August 12) after she failed to show up for work at Alpharetta’s Loving Hands Animal Clinic & Pet Resort. The dogs that she was caring for in her home were euthanized on Wednesday (August 15).
Authorities have no idea what happened, what prompted one dog or all the dogs to attack.
“Since the second grade when she read the book ‘Throw Away Pets,’ she vowed to be a voice for all animals,” her parents, Greg and Ellen Carey, said in a statement. “Upon placing her first abandoned animal in a permanent loving home in 2003, she volunteered countless hours with rescue networks and animal shelters. There she did what she loved the most: rescuing animals from untenable situations to find them safe, loving homes.”
Sgt. Kim Medlin of DeKalb County Animal County said Carey’s death was the county’s first fatal dog bite.
Neighbors reportedly said the dogs appeared friendly, and were surprised at the news. Officials at Loving Hands Animal Clinic were not only saddened but also surprised, particularly since Carey had “a way” with dogs.
No one will likely ever know what happened.
