Dr. Sophia Yin, Radio Interviews: Perfect Puppy, Kitten Socialization

Dr. Sophia Yin, applied animal behaviorist, was more than a tad special as a person, extraordinarily generous, as well as a talented communicator. She died unexpectedly, September 28 at age 48.

Instead of focusing on her loss, I suggest we shine a spotlight on what she did, authoring several books including “Low Stress Handling, Restraint and Behavior Modification of Dogs & Cats.” She’s was downright brilliant, inventing he Treat & Train, a reward-based training system. She produced and hosted many DVD’s and YouTube videos, all to help pets. Most significantly she changed the way many view animals, instead of forces she demonstrated science and showed us practically how to use positive reinforcement.

Over the years, I interview Yin more times that I can count. Here are a few from my national radio show, Steve Dale’s Pet World

  • Listen HERE as Dr. Sophia Yin and I talk about her then newly released book, “Perfect Puppy in 7 Days: How to Start Your Puppy Off Right”  you start off with a puppy, starting with what you DO want instead of stressing what you don’t want. What you do, for example, if the puppy is chewing on the wrong thing. (from October, 2011)
  • Listen HERE as we talked about why play is so important to puppies, and which toys might be better than others, and her book, “Perfect Puppy in 7 Days: How to Start Your Puppy Off Right” (from June, 2012)
  • I had been out talking about kitten socialization classes at this juncture for a few years, and Dr. Yin joined in – starting to teach these classes too. Listen HERE, as we talked about kindergarten for cats. And she describes how to teach a cat to accept taking pills. Oh, and you can teach a kitten to “come.” (from May, 2010)

Dr. Yin was always eager to do print, radio or video interviews with, and always did so with a smile on her face – you can hear that in voice, as well as her passion.
