It’s Caught on For a Reason: Fear Free with Founder Dr. Marty Becker
It seems everyone is now Fear Free certified, from individual veterinary professionals to veterinary practices to shelters to dog trainers to dog groomers to very soon pet sitters and dog walkers. So, to find out what it’s all about I spoke on my national Steve Dale’s Pet World radio show to Fear Free founder Dr. Marty Becker.
Dr. Becker explains how the concept of Fear Free began, when he realized that behavior and emotional health is medicine and intertwined with psychological well-being. As veterinary behaviorist Dr. Karen Overall says, “Behavior is medicine.”
We chat a bit how the best preventive medicine for us might have four legs and be in our laps, and Dr. Becker wrote an entire book about all this called The Healing Power of Pets, which is just a relevant today.
The real secret to the focus of Fear Free, says Dr. Becker, is to reach pet parents in their homes, which is what the website Fear Free Happy Homes is all about. Best way to learn about ANYTHING regarding your pets’ behavior, and the information is authoritative and peer reviewed, and free to anyone to wants to check it out. Aside from printed stories written by experts and reviewed by boarded veterinary experts, there are videos too. Now that fireworks season is about here, this is particularly relevant. Here’s are two stories about pets fearful of fireworks, this one is on my site, and this one I authored for Fear Free Happy Homes.
