Large Cat Food Recall in the UK

Share

A disease causing cat blood cell count to fall rapidly, leading to serious illness and sometimes death called pancytopenia is on the rise in the UK, and cat foods have been implicated as the likely cause.

“Typically, we may see one case of this per year, but we have seen now 10 cats with severe pancytopenia in the last four weeks,” said Dr Barbara Glanemann, senior lecturer in small animal medicine at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC). However, that number is far higher, now at least 40 to 50 cats (and some reports indicate over 100 cats) have been impacted around the UK. The RVC is running a survey of owners who think their cats may been affected.

Also, various cat foods have been recalled, though the specific explanations for these cats becoming ill and most dying remains unclear. The Government is working with the Royal Veterinary College and the Animal Plant and Health Agency to investigate a possible link between the food and feline pancytopenia, though that link has yet to be explained or even confirmed..
