It’s the most special time of year, the Lincoln State Cat Show is this weekend, February 22 to 23 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.at the Kane County Fairgrounds, Prairie Center 525 S Randall Rd, St. Charles. Listen HERE to my conversation from Steve Dale’s Pet World, WGN Radio with show manager Cary Plummer.

Lykoi caat

We start off first by discussing what the heck a cat show is, and how the cats are judged There will be 42 breeds represented at the cat show, among 225 individual cats.

The show will also feature the rare Lykoi, cat sometimes called the Werewolf cat. I was mistaken, thinking Lykoi cats were developed in Russia or one of the nations which were once a part of Russia. But it appears they are All-American, as they were developed from five genetic sources by a dude in Tennessee. Who knew there are werewolf’s in Tennessee?

Throughout the show veterinarians and others cat experts will appear in the education ring. I am there Sunday, 2 p.m. with latest Updates from the Winn Feline Foundation, including news from the FIP Symposium, and how Fear Free is transforming the world for cats. Here are the education ring events:

Here are three cat breeds you might not know:

  • American Shorthair: A gentle companion and great playmate for your children. The American Shorthair breed originated from cats following settlers from Europe to North America. Records indicate that even the Mayflower carried several cats to hunt the ship’s rats. Many color variations.

  • Egyptian Mau: Uniquely spotted happen to be fiercely loyalty to their owners. These cats are hardly related to cheetahs but kinda walk like them, and are extremely agile. Most people are attracted to Egyptian Mau because of their exotic good looks. They fall in love with them because of their incredible, irrepressible personalities.  The Egyptian Mau was worshipped by pharaohs and kings.
  • Tonkinese are beautiful, medium-sized cats, surprising heavy and muscular. Their fur – comes in 12 colors and patterns – is uniquely short, soft, and silky; it’s easy to care for and wonderful to pet Examples of the color patterns are Platinum Mink, Champagne Point, and Blue Solid, sounds fancy doesn’t it? This breed can be talkative, is fun but also quite cuddly.

Pet store sales

I mention how Naperville, IL has banned the sale of dogs/cats at pet stores. But now some want that ban and others in the state The good news – what we do need – is to support that state-wide there’s now a proposal to ban sales of dogs/cats at pet stores.

The Denver City Council, passed reversing the ban on dogs called pit bulls. However, the Mayor used his veto. Now it’s up to the council to overrule the veto.

In Illinois some insurance companies charge more if you have a dog called a pit bull or won’t even allow you to have homeowner’s insurance. The hope is that this will soon change in Illinois, and ultimately around the country.
