One Health is more than about companion animals, all animals; we depend on honeybees for example

One Heath is how animals interact with us and with our environment – and that topic has never been more relevant than today. It appears clear that the pandemic causing SARS CoV-2 (the novel corona virus) began at a so-called wet market or animal market in China with a bat and likely an intermediary species before jumping to humans and changing our planet. That’s what One Health is all about, the notion at we are all inter-connected.

Here, on the my National Steve Dale’s Pet World radio show, I talk with a One Health guru, Dr. Michael Lappin, professor internal medicine Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and is a part of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) One Health Committee. WASAVA does pretty much represent the veterinary world, with over 120 nations participating.

One Health includes disease we can get from animals (rabies, for instance) or the impact of animals as a sentinel or warning, like tick disease; if your dogs are getting bitten by ticks then those buggers are out there and your family is also at risk.

One Health is also about the benefits we derive from companion animals, and really all animals from aardvarks to zebra.
