Doc Emrick, a very nice gesture

Each month on WGN Radio, I highlight an adoptable dog and animal shelter or rescue on the “Steve Cochran Show.” In 2016, I am 12 for 12—that means a dozen lives saved, and moreover focusing attention with PR to shelter events and activities, which saves more lives.

On Tuesday (December 27), we adopted Wild Turkey, a Labrador mix from South Suburban Humane Society. Wild Turkey lived up to his name, as the segment was also live on CLTV, and he left us all something to remember. Hearing it all was Mike “Doc” Emrick, legendary hockey broadcaster.

Emrick appeared after my segment with Pete McMurray, but it turns out Emrick is a fan of my WGN show, gets up early to hear me, and is also a huge pet lover.

This sort of thing has happened to me before—where a person I admire turns out to be a fan of mine—but this might top them all. I  am a huge hockey fan, and there’s no doubt Emrick is one of the greatest hockey broadcasters ever.

And, get this, Emrick contacts me personally, and not only pays it forward for the adoption of Wild Turkey from South Suburban, he pays for the shelter’s next FIVE adoptions! To thank the iconic broadcaster, South Suburban names five dogs after Chicago Blackhawks.

So come in, visit South Suburban Humane at 1103 West End Ave. Chicago Heights, and adopt a Blackhawk named dog, or any dog or cat.
