The Tail of Two Species: Patricia McConnell Explains Why We Love Dogs

Share
I’ve been asked many times who my favorite people are to interview. One day, I’ll figure out that answer, but I can tell you certified applied animal behaviorist Patricia McConnell is totally in the top-10. I love her books, I love the way she puts things. I’m a fan. And if you haven’t read “For the Love of a Dog: Understanding Emotion in You and Your Best Friend”or “The Other End of the Leash,” these are must reads for dog lovers.
I recently sat down with Patricia and interviewed her for a print story for my Tribune Media Services column; and also the audio archive is now available at WLS-AM On Demand.
Also, we did a few separate video interviews – watch Patricia McConnell. Here she talks about training by using a four-letter word.
Topics in the print piece and On Demand audio are wide ranging and include how to use play to train; about oxytocin and the role this hormone plays, even about sometimes how re-homing a dog is the most loving thing you can do no matter how heart-breaking. And we even touched on the ‘C word,’ cats.
After reading, watching and listening – let me know what you think….but hopefully you can tell why I so admire Patricia McConnell. I love the comment from Blog poster Jean who emailed, “Sometimes, your Blog lets us inside the behavior and veterinary world giving us pet owners get amazing insight. I hope one day you have one of your detailed discussion with Patricia McConnell” So Jean, this one is for you.
