There’s no doubt that military working dogs save our soldiers’ lives by detecting landmines, They’re not the only ones with this talent. Giant Gambian pouched rats can do the job, and arguably do it better. And they are indeed giant, weighing about nine to 10 lbs., While too light set off the explosives, who who wants to train a nearly 10 lb. rat? I bet clicker training pioneer Karen Pryor would be proud that her method is being used for that purpose. By comparison pet rats or domestic rats are less than half the size of these rats on steroids. Still, when tamed at a young age, the giant rats are actually easy to handle.
