Update on Dog Dragged on a Leash in Chicago
The man responsible in this video for dragging a dog on a leash outside a car while he drove has been caught..
Nelson Benitez, of Chicago was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty.
Police said Benitez, 69, was placed under arrest at his home.
“Based on interviews about the account, inspection of the dog, and conditions in the home, our officers determined there was not cause for removal of the animal,” the Forest Preserve District said in a statement.
In a statement I made on WBBM-TV, I called for the charge of animal cruelty, but unsure that this event doesn’t rise to the level of a felony charge. Benitez is scheduled to appear in court on February. The misdemeanor animal cruelty charge can carry a sentence between one day to 364 days.
Police said the dog is okay, but police did not immediately release what happened to the animal following the arrest.
Based on my viewing of the video, the dog was limping. There’s no way I can know if that was a result of the man dragging the defenseless the dog on a leash outside the car as he drove inside the car, or if the dog was previously injured or limping for another reason.
