Listen to this very special WGN Radio Petcast celebrating Hero Dogs, and the American Humane Association’s Hero Dog Awards.

The celebration begins with Robin Ganzert,
President/CEO of the American
Humane Association
who describes the Hero Dog Awards.

Robin also
describes the Lucy Fund created to support animal assisted therapy dogs to honor of my dog Lucy.

Animal assisted therapy dogs are hero dogs – what they do may be magical, but it’s also real

You can help support this award, and animal assisted therapy with a contribution to the Lucy Fund.

If there were human hero awards, Debrah Schnackenberg and her team with
the American Humane Association Red Star Emergency Services unit would
paws down win – for all the lives they save when disaster strikes. I
spoke with Debrah from flood ravaged Memphis. I also talked to
Debrah about her own search and rescue dog work, and the bond she has with
her hero dogs.

Rin Tin Tin is likely the most famous hero dog of all time…

Rin Tin Tin

Aside from
all those movies back in the day, Rin Tin Tin is, in part, responsible
for launching the U.S, Military dog program. Daphne Hereford talks about
her work with the current Rin Tin Tin, who is a cadaver dog (searches
for dead bodies). Rin Tin Tin is an official Ambassador to the Hero Dog
Awards
.

This shot of Riley on a Stokes basket was seen on the network TV news, and spread around the world on the Internet – one of the most indelible images form Ground Zero which I was attempting to describe on the Petcast.

Victoria Stilwell

From “It’s Me or the Dog” on Animal Planet, Victoria StilwellNational
Ambassador American Humane Association
– recalls her work with dogs
just after September 11.These dogs essentially served a role, which I call
‘comfort dogs.’

Victoria also announces that I will soon be starting a blog on her website! That’s Pawsitively cool!

And I talked with Anthony and Megan, two individuals who have dogs that
they believe are hero dogs. And they are both right!

Leonidas

One dog, Leonidas, is a Pit Bull who happens to be
missing a leg, and has a deformed paw. Another is a Guide Dog named Pasta. Whether
they win or not, it’s clear their dogs are heroes.
