World Small Animal Veterinary Association Focus on Cancer in Pets
Veterinary surgeon Dr. Jolle Kirpensteijn, chief veterinary officer at Hill’s Pet Nutrition (U.S.) is teaming with the World Small Animal Veterinary Association with a working group of experts to focus on cancer in companion animals, and by doing so may just help people with cancer too. Pets share our environment, so using our pets as a model for cancers makes sense.
Goals included earlier diagnosis in pets – if we can do that, same as in people, prognosis improves.
Dr. Kirpensteijn explains on the national Steve Dale’s Pet World radio show why there may be more cancer in pets today as compared to than ever before. Dogs over 10 years have a 50/50 shot at getting cancer.
The good news is that cancer among our pets is no longer a certain death sentence.
