It’s unusual for dog owners to steer clear of tennis balls. But, now there’s reason to think twice, or at least check the tennis ball for a wick, before allowing your pup to pick it up. What is our world coming to?
People are stuffing firecrackers inside tennis balls, according to multiple printed reports and Jarod Kasner, public information officer for the Kent Police Department in Washington state. The idea isn’t to kill dogs, so much as it is to toss a ball toward the sky and watch it explode. People leave balls behind they think are duds, and dogs pick them up.
Washington State police warn if you see a ball or any other household item that looks burnt or has a wick or tape attached to it, don’t touch it. Obviously, people can also be harmed.
How widespread are these events? It appears to be reported only in Washington State, and even there it’s hardly common, but it has happened, and dogs have died.
