Roxy, our 15 year old cat is young – according to Dr. Margie Scherk, editor Journal Feline Medicine and Surgery. At the Chicago Veterinary Conference, Scherk was talking about various cat health issues, and she asked the veterinarians in the room, “What’s the oldest cat you’ve ever had in your practice?” The answer: 26. Well, now we can top that.
A British cat, named Rubble, has been hailed as the oldest in the world after celebrating 30th years.
Rubble has lived with Michele Foster since she got him as a kitten on her 20th birthday, May 1988. The pair have been inseparable ever since and Rubble has now matched the age of the last world record holder.
Rubble celebrated the milestone with a party at his local veterinary where he was treated to some of his favorite cat food and a free check-up.
You know how old people are always asked, “What’s your secret?”
Foster says she believes Rubble’s secret is that he’s always been pampered like a child, since she’s never had children of her own.
Foster, now 49, lives in Exeter, Devon, England, and also has three Persian cats Harley, Woody and Ted.
The oldest cat ever, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, Creme Puff, who was born in August 1967 and lived until August of 2005, an amazing 38 years. Creme Puff lived with her owner, Jake Perry, in Austin, TX.
So, what is the average age of a cat? Truly, no one knows. We do know that meeting a cat’s nutritional and environmental needs matter a lot, and so do veterinary check ups for preventive care. Not getting hit by cars helps, since cats usually lose when such collisions occur. When Rubble was born, living into double digits at all was considered old for cats. So, in 30 years domestic cat lifespans have increased (maybe even more than canine lifespans, which have also increased). Understanding cat health matters, often from studies funded by the non-profit Winn Feline Foundation. Obviously, genetics plays a role in how long any individual cat may live. But exactly, what the secret sauce to extreme longevity is, no one knows.
